The Many Faces of Multivariate Data: Chernoff Faces
نویسنده
چکیده
Humans have the ability to discern subtle differences in facial expressions. What if multivariate data were represented in the form of a facial expression? Would it be easier to compare data sets? That is the argument behind Chernoff faces, an idea conceived by Herman Chernoff. Traditionally, Chernoff faces are a series of 2D shapes and lines that imitate facial features i.e. a triangle for a nose, a circle for an eye etc. However, Chernoff outlined only a concept; he did not specify an algorithm to implement this idea. Given a data set, each variable would be mapped to a particular facial feature and morphed accordingly. The ultimate goal is to create a web-based application that takes in multiple data sets and generates a Chernoff face for each set in order to juxtapose the data. The Application of V-system in Visualization of Multidimensional Data1
Chernoff face is a technique of multidimensional data visualization in multivariate statistics. This paper proposes a new method to quantify the overall features of Chernoff faces, and presents a new programmed method for clustering Chernoff faces. Using this method misjudgment caused by human eyes can be avoided. Moreover, people can further evaluate the samples if the evaluation standard is g...
متن کاملAn Experimental Analysis of the Effectiveness of Features in Chernoff Faces
Chernoff faces have been proposed as a tool for scientific and information visualization. However, the effectiveness of this form of visualization is still open to speculation. Chernoff faces, it is suggested, make use of humans' apparently inherent ability to recognize faces and small changes in facial characteristics. Limited research has been conducted to assess how well Chernoff faces make ...
متن کاملConcept Testing of Some Visualization Methods for Geographic Metadata
Concepts of metadata visualization have been developed in order to help users in understanding of metadata about geographic datasets. These concepts apply graphic samples and four multivariate visualization methods: scatter plot matrix, parallel coordinates plot, star plots and Chernoff faces. The concepts were tested with users of geographic metadata in the Finnish Defence Forces. The test res...
متن کاملUsing Chernoff Face Plots For Burglary Suspect Prioritisation
Most good quantitative analysis begins with data exploration. However, when there are many variables how can one summarise and compare cases in terms of all values? The first two Principal Components are often plotted which can, for example, reveal clusters. However, implementation and interpretation of such a method requires a moderate level of statistical skill and there is no guarantee that ...
متن کاملImplementing psychophysiology in clinical assessments of adolescent social anxiety: use of rater judgments based on graphical representations of psychophysiology.
Social stressor tasks induce adolescents' social distress as indexed by low-cost psychophysiological methods. Unknown is how to incorporate these methods within clinical assessments. Having assessors judge graphical depictions of psychophysiological data may facilitate detections of data patterns that may be difficult to identify using judgments about numerical depictions of psychophysiological...
